At Norton CP School, our governors, all our staff, parents and children work as a team, building on success, in a happy, creative, high attaining environment where everyone feels valued.

Governors are appointed to ensure that objectives are met and that planning for the future is specific, monitored, visionary and realistic. We are here to support and encourage the Head teacher along with her Senior Leadership Team and all school personnel so that children have access to an enriched education.

The governing body will work diligently to meet its core functions which are:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Our Governing Body Constitution allows for 9 Governors.

In addition, we also welcome Associate Members to our Governing Body; people with specific expertise who wish to contribute, we currently have 1 Associate Member. The school values the presence of parents on the Governing Body as parents have a unique insight to bring to the role of governor.

We meet twice a school term where a wide range of matters are discussed and important decisions are made.

Additionally, each Governor holds specific responsibilities as a Lead Governor and will attend meetings and undertake monitoring visits to the school to fulfil obligations.

As governors we support and monitor many issues regarding the school, including finance, pupil attainment, safety and welfare, staff development and the appointment of the very best calibre of teacher, support and associate staff. We also approve a wide range of policies, monitor the maintenance of the buildings and grounds maintenance and health and safety provision.

Our priority is to ensure that every child is receiving the best support and encouragement in order to achieve their very best both as a learner and as an individual by asking searching questions.

I can be contacted through the school should you wish to discuss any matter further.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible throughout the year. With very best wishes to you from

Linda McCarthy, Chair of Governors.

LA and Co-opted Governors

Mrs Linda McCarthy

Category: Local Authority (Chair)
Appointed: September 2015
Term of office ends: August 2019
Elected by: FGB

It is my privilege to be part of the governing body of our school. I am currently Chair of Governors and take the responsibility very seriously. As a retired primary school head teacher, I try to use the skills I have learned to support every member of the school staff, especially the head teacher, in providing the best learning and teaching opportunities for every child in the school. I have 4 grandchildren and I would be delighted if the schools they attend in the future are as vibrant and committed to pupil progress as Norton C.P. School.

Reverend Rachel Hirst

Appointed: September 2015
Term of office ends: August 2019
Elected by: FGB

I am Vicar at St. Peter’s Church in Norton and enjoy coming into school to take assemblies and a few lessons. I also host visits to the church by various classes where we have fun exploring the building and finding out what different things are used for. I always enjoy my visits to the school and hope to contribute as much as I can to the school by being a governor.

Mr Shane Jarman

Category: Co-opted
Appointed: September 2016
Term of office ends: August 2020
Elected by: FGB

I have 2 children that currently attend the school and must say how impressed and rewarded I feel by how both of them have really blossomed and grown in confidence throughout their school life, an experience that, as voiced and shared by other governors, I would like to ensure that all of the children within the school can share and benefit from.

Professionally, I am senior Financial Services Manager working for a major UK/Worldwide bank, although nowadays I am predominately based within the Rydale area. I have worked within the banking industry for over 20 years and would like to think that there are areas and aspects of this experience that I will be able to call on and utilise within the valuable role of the school governor.

Outside of work, along with spending quality time with my family, I am a keen sportsman and, although my ‘finest years’ are far behind me, still continue to run in order to attempt to keep those fitness levels up and follow both football and cricket at national and international level.

Parent Governors

Mrs Helen Robinson

Appointed: September 2015
Term of office ends: August 2019
Elected by: Parents

I have lived in Norton since I was 2 ½ years old and went to school here. I have 3 children at the school and I work as a Family Law Barrister specialising in children’s welfare. I was elected as a Parent Governor in 2011 and have thoroughly enjoyed serving as a Governor for the last 4 years and particularly the last year as Vice Chair. I want to continue to help the school go from strength to strength, offering every child the opportunity to fulfill their potential. I have very fond memories of my school days here and am grateful for the opportunities I was given. I want to ensure every child has the same experience.

Mr Ian Barnard - Vice Chair

Appointed: September 2015
Term of office ends: August 2019
Elected by: Parents

I have one child at our school who is now the third generation of my wife’s family to attend Norton C.P. School. My child’s confidence and abilities have been nurtured and encouraged since starting and I want to help continue this for every pupil. I am a solicitor in a local firm specialising in property and agricultural law and I also have previous committee experience. I believe these skills will help support the school and staff in its continued growth and success. I have a keen interest in rugby and cricket and have previously coached various age groups.

Mr Joe Rumney

Appointed: February 2017
Term of office ends: January 2021
Elected by: FGB

I have been heavily involved in secondary education for 13 years, and have been teaching Chemistry, Science and Engineering at Malton Secondary School since 2010. In my role as one of the Lead Practitioner Team and Assistant Head of Science I have been involved in developing new curriculum content and structure and heavily involved in training staff and trainee teachers. Prior to living in Norton, I taught in a number of National Challenge Schools in Birmingham and Warwickshire. Therefore I have a large skill set and experience base which I can offer to Norton Primary. I have two young children, one currently at the school. I enjoy learning and like that students at Norton Primary are encouraged to enjoy the thrill of learning using the language of "growth mindset".

Associate Governor

Miss Maddie Griffin

No voting rights

As a deputy head teacher at our school, I help the governors to evaluate how well the school is doing and ask questions to help us move forward. I enjoy being involved in school development in helping to make sure that every child gets the very best education. I work with the Finance and Staffing Committee to make sure the school spends its money wisely and gets best value for money.

Staff Governor

Mr Paul Merrall

Appointed: September 2015
Term of office ends: August 2019
Elected by: Staff

I have worked at Norton CP School for six years as a teacher and as numeracy co-ordinator. As numeracy co-ordinator I have worked alongside the staff in all year groups from Foundation Stage 1 all the way up to Year 6, so I have been able to see the learning experience for the full age range of our children. This work has also given me a rounded overview of children’s development that I believe will help support the school as it develops. I thoroughly enjoy working here and recognise it as a special place with a positive ethos that has the needs of its children at the core of everything it does. As staff governor, I am keen to play a larger role in maintaining a happy school in which children can thrive.
