East Barnby Tuesday

Tuesday, 9th June 2026

Although Monday night was quite a late one for many, a solid breakfast soon got everyone ready for their morning briefing. The staff explained to each group what they needed for either; a day canoeing on the River Esk, or beck scrambling and orienteering. A quick dorm scramble and everyone was ready.

The weather was kind to both activities. We had sharp showers and gusty wind but they somehow managed to happen at the right time (i.e. while we were sheltered / already wet) or be in the right direction (down-river to Whitby Harbour).

Dinner was a choice between burger and potato wedges or a chicken curry with rice and naan, both with an optional side salad. Yoghurt, a cookie and fruit were available for pudding and the tuck shop opened shortly afterwards.

The final activity before bed was to walk a marked trail out from Birch Hall up into Dalby Forest. It is quite possible that the most dangerous animal in the forest at that time was the Norton Crocodile.
