Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Welcome to Norton Community Primary School.

On this page you will find information about our provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

(Coming soon!) Please click here to see our termly SEND Newsletter.

Our school SENDCOs are Miss Katherine Simms and Mrs Sarah Bates who are also supported by the specialist SEN teacher Mrs Tracey Ralph. We have a SEND governor who helps oversee the provision in school. You can contact the school SENDCO via the School Office, by phone on 01653 692104 or by email at SENDadmin@norton-pri.n-yorks.sch.uk to ask a question or arrange an appointment.

You can find documentation for how we support pupils with SEND, in line with the Government’s SEND Code of Practice, below:

NCPS Information Report 2025-2026

We are “an inclusive school”

AT NCPS, we pride ourselves on ensuring that every child is given opportunities to achieve their full potential. We know that every teacher is a teacher of SEND and all staff are trained to support different needs within their classroom.

In our most recent OFSTED inspection (2022), it was reported that NCPS “is an inclusive school” and that we are “highly ambitious for pupils with SEND”.

Whole School Provision and the SEND Register

You will see from our 2025-2026 Whole School Provision Map (link) that for each Area of Need we provide a range of support and provision.

All children at Norton CP receive Quality First Teaching throughout the school day (Universal Offer). Staff regularly monitor children’s progress and are trained to identify when children may need additional support. Sometimes a pupil may benefit from additional booster sessions or provisions which support their social, emotional and mental health which are delivered by teachers or trained support staff. This is Targeted Support and is documented on our school system.

Pupils receiving this targeted support will be reviewed after one intervention cycle (approximately one term). Where concerns remain, a Pupil Passport is created which contains information about the child’s strengths and difficulties, how adults can support them and any additional provisions they may have access to. If a child continues to need Targeted support, external professional support or further individualised, structured support delivered 1:1 or in small groups (Targeted Plus), discussions will take place regarding putting the child on the school’s SEN register.

Some children’s needs may require them to have an Education Health Care Plan. Further information about these can be found on the SENDIASS website.

The Graduated Approach

This is the process we follow once a specific need has been identified. Generally, within school, all pupils on the SEN register have 3 review cycles across the academic year. Each review cycle (APDR) consists of class teachers:

  1. Assessing the child’s current needs and progress towards any previous targets set.

  2. Planning, adapting or creating new targets and provisions

  3. Doing an intervention or provision to support progress towards these targets.

  4. Reviewing the child’s progress towards the targets.

The child’s targets will be shared with them and their parents / carers at the termly parent evenings.

External Professionals and Outside Agency support

We recognise that sometimes we require more specialist advice to support your child’s needs. We have access to a range of professionals and outside agencies who can advise us on how best to meet your child’s needs. These include, but are not limited to:

  • CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service)

  • Compass Phoenix

  • BeU (Autism referrals)

  • North Yorkshire SEND Hub (specialist teachers and advisors)

  • Physiotherapists

  • SaLT (Speech and Language Therapy)

  • Occupational Therapy Service

  • NHS Well-Being Team

Targeted Mainstream Provision (TMP) – The Satellite Class

Norton CP is proud to have a specialist provision for pupils with Communication & Interaction Needs. It is run by our specialist SEN teacher. Please see further information on the school website here.

The Den

Sometime children find mainstream classrooms and school particularly challenging and are unable to access their mainstream classroom.

The Den provision at Norton CP currently offers a safe and nurturing mixed age class of up to 6 children currently working within the Engagement Model (pre-Key Stage). These children have significant Communication & Interaction needs, alongside Cognition & Learning needs and cannot access their mainstream class. This class is run by a specialist SEN teacher and highly skilled SEN support staff.
