PE and Sport Premium

At Norton CP School we believe that physical education should aim to develop and build upon each child’s physical fitness and key skills year on year.

We will provide a wide range of sporting options so that each child can find a sport they feel they are achieving in and enjoy. We will teach our children how to apply the key skills of physical education to ensure they feel they are achieving and progressing.

We will provide opportunities for children to compete as a team both in school and locally.

We will teach the children the importance of being active and eating healthily. We want to help each child to develop a lifelong positive attitude towards being healthy, fit and knowing which elements of sport makes them shine.

What is the Sports Premium?

The Department for Education (DfE) wants all children to have equal access to high-quality PE provision and opportunities to experience and participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities. We receive £20,834 in funding from the DfE to support sport in school.

The funding can be used to:

  • make additional and sustainable improvements to the PE, sport and physical activity they provide
  • provide or improve equal access to sport for boys and girls
  • ensure teachers have the relevant skills and knowledge to confidently teach PE in a structured way, prioritising continued professional development (CPD) and training where needed.

Our vision for the PE and Sport Premium is that all pupils leaving primary school should have the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport. To achieve our vision, our objectives are to achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in our school.

Our 5 Key Areas Of Improvement

  • The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity.
  • The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement.
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
  • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
  • Increased participation in competitive sport.

Swimming and Water Safety

Swimming is an important skill and can encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. We currently provide swimming instruction in all key stage 2. The programme of study for PE sets out the expectation that pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
