Wyse House Farm campsite, near Eden Camp, was our venue for the annual Year 5 Camp.
Outdoor experts, Wolf and Emily, helped the children to learn to pitch a tent, build shelters and start fires.
Some children volunteered as camp chefs to cook a tasty chicken pasta supper. Others helped to set the picnic tables and to wash up after eating.
In the evening, we returned to the woods to learn fire-lighting with a firesteel. We all contributed tiny twigs, bigger twigs and finally logs to make a roaring campfire.
With the fire as a backdrop, Wolf and Emily put on a little show to explain what we know of the the life and mysterious death of Ötsi the Alpine Iceman.
Each of four groups then performed their own play around the campfire to entertain everyone.
As the embers died, it was finally time to toast marshmallows. A cup of hot chocolate was the perfect thing to wash down a tasty smore.
For some, it was their first night in a tent. Perhaps, it wasn’t the easiest thing to get to sleep, but most managed to get some rest. What goes up must come down. So the first job of the morning was to pack up the camping kit and take down the tents.
This was followed by an exciting geocaching challenge. Children use a handheld GPS device to track down some elusive animals.
