At Norton CP School, children are encouraged to mark-make and write for purpose from the moment they enter our school
Adults model mark making and writing skills as they engage with the children in continuous and enhanced provision, and throughout class inputs. There are many opportunities for independent writing across a range of provision areas in the classroom so that children can write freely.
Our pupils are taught the skills they need for writing through our phonics programme Read, Write, Inc. Our teachers model high quality writing daily with shared and modelled writing. This includes adult-child interactions to build language, encourage oral rehearsal, and develop new vocabulary and sentence structure. Children continue to develop their writing through a weekly guided writing task where the children will work in a small group with an adult. Children in FS2 also have a class book session each day that acts as a stimulus for both modelled and independent writing. The children have access to tools to help them with their writing, such as the Read Write Inc sound mats.
In FS1, fine motor activities are part of the daily timetable. Dough disco, Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle and Letter Join’s ‘Getting Ready for Writing’ activities are used as adult-led lessons to prepare children for handwriting. In-line with the rest of the school, FS2 have daily ‘Letter-join’ handwriting lessons. Interventions are in place across the EYFS to support gross and fine motor development where needed.
See below for some home-learning packs from our handwriting programme ‘Letter-join’. Please speak to your class teacher regarding any general questions or queries relating to logging into a letter-join account.
