We left Norton with high hopes and in an adventurous spirit. The weather held until just before tea time, and even then the light drizzle could not dampen our mood.
On arrival, we were welcomed by the East Barnby staff and shown to our dorms. The first task was to make up our beds ready for the evening. Some were better at this than others! Sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers went through a wild range of arangements before ending up like something you could sleep in.
One child was overheard to say, “Making a bed! How can it be this hard?”
There followed a tour of the site and instructions on what was needed for the afternoon’s activities: beck scrambling and shelter building.
Most groups were in the beck, getting thoroughly wet (and enjoying every minute). The little beck that runs into the River Esk hasn’t had much rain to fill it this Spring. Nevertheless, there was plenty of the wet stuff for everyone to get aquainted with.
Luckily, there was still enough water at ‘Loony Leap’ for the very bravest to plummet daringly straight into the tea coloured drink.
Another group took to the woods behind Falling Foss and made a grand set of woodland shelters.
On the way back to the minibus, we found a fallen log over a stream. It was actually a little easier to balance across than it looked.
Tea was served at 6PM in the East Barnby canteen. There was a main choice of bolognese sauce or sweet and sour chicken with pasta. There was, however, a slight over catering mistake on the number of spong puddings required. A couple of likely lads offered to eat the surplus.
