Tuesday

Tuesday, 10th June 2025

Tuesday’s weather was an improving picture all day long. Fortunate because we dashed up to breakfast in the rain. We sat down to sausages, eggs, mushrooms and tomato with all the usual breakfast trimmings; cereal, toast, jam, etc.

We had quite a range of activities for our different groups, today. Some went sailing while others tried windsurfing. Another group paddled canoes down the Rive Esk to Whitby Harbour. The final group had a double bill at the beach; beachcoming and body boarding.

On our return to the East Barnby Outdoor Center, there was time to clean up and warm up before tea at six. There was a choice of curry and rice or burger and chips, the latter being the most popular. The chocolate crunch and custard went down perfectly for pudding.

After tea we used East Barnby’s dry ski slope for sledging or tried out the night line to build trust and teamwork. Then we went in for hot chocolate and to celebrate one superstar’s birthday.

Sailing

Our sailors travelled off to Scaling Dam Reservoir and the friendly sailing club situated there. They first had to learn about the parts of their boats and then manoever them into the water. It was tricky to sense the wind and operate boom and tiller but the children persevered and had a throughly exciting time.

Windsurfing

Also at Scaling Dam, the windsurfers likewise had to learn how to lean on the wind and power across the water. With the day warming up, the sun out and fully equipped with wetsuits, it was also quite fun falling in when things didn’t go to plan.

Canoeing

Canoeing down the Esk is more leisurely affair. You get to sit down in a canoe. You only have to use your arms. Nevertheless, it takes a bit of practice to make that pesky canoe go in the direction you’d like it to. A sandwich lunch on a little island at Ruswarp broke up the journey and there were some astonishing sights along the way: shipwrecks, herons and a massive viaduct.

Beachcombing

Probably the most leisurely of the activites, what is not to like about pottering about on the foreshore looking for minibeasts in the rock pools? Just the ticket if you’re scheduled for the surf in the afternoon.

Body Boarding

There’s nothing leisurely about body boarding. The only way is into the sea and onto the waves. It is absolutely fabulous fun!

Night Line

Happy Birthday!

Surprisingly, an East Barnby birthday isn’t that unusual. Our lucky birthday girl this year took it all in her stride. She wore her “Birthday Girl” tiara at breakfast and dinner, then enjoyed a cake in the evening. It was a 60 strong singalong to the traditional celebration song. Not everyone can say they had that when they turned 11.

More Photos

Keep scrolling down for more photos from the day. They will take a while to load, but could be worth it.

With around 500 photos taken every day, it is impossible to include them all here. What you see is a fairly random selection. Hopefully, they’ll give you the flavour of what your child has been engaged in - even if you don’t see a great shot of them actually doing it.

Rest assured that all the photos make it back to school. The children will have the chance to ferret through the images and choose their favourites for a memory booklet.
