Year 2 And Beyond

Pupils continue to benefit from a rich and varied curriculum that promotes and celebrates reading, writing and the discussion of books. Our school approach to reading comprehension and the progression of skills is detailed in the Reading Progression section of the English Curriculum Map.

Pupils will continue to bring home age-appropriate and challenge-appropriate texts. We provide pupils with a selection of classic literature and new and exciting authors and texts, so that they can develop an appreciation of quality texts both old and new. We continue to use ‘books as hooks’ across all curriculum areas to excite and motivate learners.

During our reading lessons at school, high quality texts are used alongside the term ‘VIPERS’ to teach each reading skill. VIPERS stands for:

V
Vocabulary
I
Infer
P
Predict
E
Explain
R
Retreive
S
Summarise

This consistent approach supports pupils and ensures the teaching of reading is specific and focused. Alongside this, every child has time to develop their reading fluency demonstrate their comprehension 1:1 with a teacher or teaching assistant each week.
