WellComm is a toolkit used in our EYFS Unit to assess and support children’s speech and language development.
It is built upon fun, child-friendly interventions that aim to accelerate development in early language.
The WellComm approach also includes some useful building blocks for developing speech and language at school and at home.
Use lively and interesting intonation. Children will listen more easily.
Break instructions down into smaller parts (e.g 'Get your coat' and, once this is done, 'Put your shoes on').
Repetition leads to familiarity. Familiarity makes children confident. Confident children learn better.
Use short, simple sentences.
Make sure they are looking at you before giving and instruction.
Say a child's name before giving an instruction (e.g. 'Sam, come here!')
Model the use of new language and clear sentences.
Repeat back the child's unclear speech (e.g. Child: 'I runned and felled over.', Adult: 'Ah, you ran and fell over.').
Say a child's name before giving an instruction (e.g. 'Sam, come here!')
Give them time to think.
Question less, comment more.
